He sighs. “I think I’ve always known, but we’re not in the company of acceptance, are we?”
“Depends on who you told,” I remark, knowing I wouldn’t have cared. “For what it’s worth, thank you for looking after Andreas.” I then grow serious. “But please let this go. I’m not a concern for you anymore.”
“We’ll see about that.” He starts to leave but stops. “Beckett wanted me to see that you’re going to get ready for the gala. He wants you there.”
“Not for a good cause, I’m sure.” I crinkle my nose, really thinking about this event. “Why am I even going? Sean made it clear that I’m to stay here.”
“Just go with it. Cause mischief if you must. I don’t care. I just know some people have interest in seeing if you’re actually back.”
I cock a brow. “The last time that happened I was nearly killed in a car crash and then almost kidnapped for surviving.”
He chuckles. “True, but I’m pretty sure Beckett wants to use you for his own benefit, and seeing as he just drew a gun on you but didn’t fire it, I’m guessing he’s seeing the advantage you give him.”
“Ah, so you heard?”
“Of course I did.” He laughs but shakes his head in total dismay. “Babe, you get him so twisted, but one day, you won’t be so lucky. You only have power over Beckett in this place.”
“And you, apparently.” I try my luck, giving him a wink. “I have the dress. I also picked out a few luxuries Beckett might equally appreciate and hate.”
“What is it?” he asks, his face falling.
“Nothing for you to concern yourself with. Just a few favours to really set a precedence.”
“Talia…”
There it is again, that warning tone.
“Seb, I really think it’s time you left.” I get up this time, pushing him toward the doorway. “We’ve got to get ready.”
“Talia… you’ve got to tell me!”
“Not so you can tell Beckett. You’ll see in good time.”
I know he left with more questions than when he came, and if Sebastian is anything like he used to be, he won’t just let this go.
And if I have to attend a social mixer, I’ll leave the mark I should’ve weeks ago.
With every killer intent I never should have lost.
