Aspen motions for me to come closer. “How do you like your meat? Nearly raw like Raven or burnt like Dex?”

“Whatever is fine.” I shrug and plop down between them. The rabbit cooking over the spit has my stomach grumbling.

“That’s a first.” Dex smirks, his eyes twinkling. “I’ve never had a woman so agreeable before.”

I nudge him in his side with my elbow. “Better?”

“There’s that fighting spirit I love,” Dex says, winking at me.

“One thing you’ll learn about life,” Aspen smiles and breaks apart a stick, throwing it in the fire. “Things change.”

“You think I don’t know that? I just need to figure out a way to change things with my wolf.” I stare into the fire. “A way that doesn’t have me dying.”
