“Try it, and you’ll be arrested.”
“Let’s go, Elena.” Nick grabbed Elena’s arm. “They’re not worth it. We’ll sort this out later.”
Myra shepherded them to the door, Daisy still hearing them arguing as they went outside. But she was more focused on Lee, who had barely taken his gaze off her. He didn’t say a word, but the look in his eyes left her heart fluttering.
Suddenly, she forgot what she had planned to say to him. The speech was useless now, especially with Lee looking at her like he wanted to eat her up.
She needed to get some focus back, otherwise Daisy was going to make an idiot of herself.
“Come on through, Daisy.”
Lee beckoned her to follow him. Daisy went around the counter and followed him through a staff only door, entering a little office. It was a little cramped, but there was enough room for her to keep away from Lee without touching him.
But that didn’t seem to be what Lee had in mind. As soon as the door shut, Lee had crowded her up against the door, kissing her until Daisy couldn’t think straight. She pressed her hands to his chest, planning on pushing him away. But she found herself sinking into his embrace.
How had she managed to keep away from him for this long? It was like she was hungry for him just after one kiss.
When they came up for air, Lee was breathing just as heavily as she was.
“I’ve been wanting to do that for two weeks. And then some.”
“Then some?”
“You think I haven’t wanted you since we first met?” Lee swallowed. “But you were with Nick, and I wasn’t about to break up that relationship. Then this happened…”
“Lee.” Daisy cupped his face in her hand. “Take a deep breath. You’re speaking too fast.”
“Am I?”
“Yes. Besides,” Daisy took a deep breath of her own. “I’ve got something I need to say to you, and I don’t want you to interrupt.”
“Can I hold you while you talk?”
“I don’t know if I can get through it.”
“Okay.” Lee eased back and leaned against the desk, folding his arms. “That better?”
It was a little better, but not much. Daisy looked down at herself, and realized that she was covered in flour. She dusted herself down.
“What we did two weeks ago…I was embarrassed at throwing myself at you.”
“I didn’t see it like that.”
“Can you let me talk?”
“Sorry.”
Daisy rubbed her hands on her thighs. Her palms were getting clammy.
“I thought it would be a one-off thing, just to let off steam. There is chemistry between us, so I thought I could leave it at just that. Especially…well…” Daisy just went for it. “Especially seeing as I’m much older than you. It shouldn’t work between us.”
“You think age is a factor in this?”
“A little bit. I’m nearly thirty-six. You could have any woman you wanted near your age. Why would you want me?”
Lee smiled.
“I want you because you’re talented and funny, smart and kind. Not to mention gorgeous and you know how to make me want more. I wouldn’t see age as a problem.”
