“You think she loves me?” I stand up. “As in still, present tense, even after everything?”
Monica rolls her eyes. “Now you’re catching on.”
“I thought she’d hate me.”
“And yet…” Luce shrugs. “What are you going to do about it?”
The ground opens up, and I’m free-falling. Because if Kennedy loves me, there might be a chance. I’ve spent the last few weeks assuming I’d ruined things with her. Thinking that she really believed it was just business and we were over. Wondering if she didn’t have the stomach to fight, or actually just didn’t care at all.
“The gears are turning.” Luce grins, looking from Monica to me.
“You’re her friends,” I say with a cautious pause. “Why would you show up here and help me? Aren’t you supposed to be out for blood?”
Luce steps closer and comes face to face with me over the desk. “Two reasons. First, we love our girl, so this is for her. Second, I spend enough time breaking people up. Maybe for once it feels kinda good to put them together.”
I remember Kennedy mentioning Luce was a divorce attorney, and the reminder makes it even more surprising that she’s here in my office.
Monica jumps up and claps her hands. “All right, team. I think we’ve established Zac is a total idiot.”
“Thanks.”
“You’re welcome.” She grins. “So what’s the plan?”
“I need to see her,” I tell them. “If I text or call, she’ll just ignore it.”
“Because that would be a total jerk move this late in the game.” Luce rolls her eyes. I’m not sure I’ve ever faced a woman this unimpressed by everything I say or do. “I swear, how have you made it this far in life?”
Monica nudges her again, but she ignores it.
Luce’s eyes brighten. “But…” she starts.
Luce leans over and whispers something in Monica’s ear, and Monica’s eyes go wide with excitement.
“Oh, my god, she’s going to hate you,” Monica says, giving Luce a nudge.
I cross my arms over my chest. “What’s she going to hate?”
A concerning smirk stretches Luce’s face. “I’ve got an idea.”
