“Those two are the cutest.” Her mama took Dimitri’s abandoned seat as she waved a fan in front of her face. “And it’s way too hot out there.”
“Why do you think I’m in here?” Zamira loved the summer and outdoor sports but it was June in Florida at noon. She needed a break from the party outside.
“At least the kids will sleep good tonight.”
“No kidding.”
“So how are things going with you two?” Her mama set her fan down and started making a plate of food, piling on various fruits from one of the platters on the island.
“Great. Amazing, actually. The kids seem to love him so much. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop.” The fact that it hadn’t, scared her a little.
“He’s a good one. A keeper.” Her mama patted her hand once. “You made a good choice with this one.”
“I really did,” she said.
“So stop waiting for that shoe to drop. You’ll run into issues. Of course you will, that’s life. But you’re not that eighteen-year-old girl anymore. You have a good head on your shoulders now.”
“I know.” She shifted in her stool and looked out the bank of windows overlooking the gorgeous patio and pool beyond, saw Andres and Dimitri deep in conversation.
And her heart skipped a beat, watching the man she loved with her baby. When he was with them, he was one hundred percent present. And he seemed to love her kids as much as they loved him. He’d been so worried about meeting them, but he’d slid right into their little family seamlessly. Her mom was right, she had to stop being afraid.
This was the next chapter in her life and she was going to embrace it fully. She wasn’t going to be afraid to accept that…this was going to work out. She was going to get her happily ever after with a man she’d never seen coming.
