“Not past tense. Calvin says he’s wearing the same sweats and T-shirt for two days in a row.” Ryann visibly shivers. “Enough is enough. Just tell him you love him. He can move on with his life.” Holding up her finger, she finishes with “Move on with you.”

“I’m not angry with him anymore.”

“Good. Tell him that so he’ll stop moping.”

“He was moping?”

“Uh, duh. He’s sorry. Tell him.”

“God, you’re bossier than your father.”

“I know.” She smiles like I just told her she won an Oscar.

“It’s not a compliment.”

“Is to me.”

Rome:How was swimming?

Me: Fun. Shriver and Ryann had a blast. By the way, thank you for the new swimsuit.

Rome: I’m glad you like it.

Me: I do. It fits great.

Rome: It does.

Me: Wait… how did you know that?

Rome: …

Me: Rome?

Rome: I may have received a photo of you at the pool.

God, I hope it’s not of my butt or stomach or thighs.

Me: That was sneaky.

Rome: She can be.

Rome: What’s on the docket for tomorrow?

Me: We’re spending the day with dad. He’s taking Ryann fishing.

Rome: I don’t think she’s done that before.

Me: That’s what she said. Between you and me, I don’t think she’s very excited.

Rome: She’ll enjoy it. She loves the water. Always has.

Me: Okay. Let’s hope.

There’s no more message from Rome, not for a good forty minutes. The phone rings, and I see his name. “Hello?”

“Hey, babe. Sorry. Calvin wanted popcorn. We’re about to watch something neither one of us has seen before.”
