I looked in my rearview mirror as I drove away. Chloe’s question was not without merit. I’d never been in a relationship. What Nancy and I shared in high school was no different than what we did in college. We hung out with friends, had sex, and then said goodnight. We never spent the night together. I’d never taken her to breakfast the morning after because I never stuck around. And Nancy never asked me to.
Was it possible I chose Nancy because I knew I would never lose my heart to her?
As crazy as it sounded, I didn’t merely have a crush on Chloe Wainwright. I’d been in love with her since fourth grade.
