She shook her head. “I’m too shaken up. Now I wish I had, but then again, I had no idea what to say in response.”
“Good. We’ll wait to hear what the computer forensics tech has to say. Someone is supposed to call me back about the comment on your website.”
“I don’t think someone would comment if they thought it could be tracked.”
“It’s a start. We need to look into this, regardless.”
“Thank you, Nathan. I’m ... We’re supposed to be trying to find your father’s shooter. I don’t want to take you away from that.”
“I’m glad I handed over the picture to Henry. Part of me feels like I betrayed my father’s trust, but things have gotten out of hand. Now others are looking into the shooter. While I keep a hand on the pulse of that investigation, I can focus on helping you with this. Between this and Seattle, you could be in imminent danger, so we need to get answers as quickly as possible. But when I got here, you were rushing out the door to get to your mother. What do you want to do now?”
“I wish she were home with me here and I could tell her what’s happened.”
“I’m not sure that you should stay here until we know the man from the past hasn’t figured out who you are and where you live.” He called Henry and put the cell to his ear.
She pressed her hand over his. “No. I don’t want anyone else to know about this for now. Not yet. Help me keep it quiet. Before I tell anyone else, I need to tell Mom. Please.”
Nathan took a deep breath to corral his frustration. What was it with people and their secret lives lately? Dad not wanting him to share had put him in the worst kind of position. Now Erin wanted to continue to hold her past close. He ended the call without leaving a voice mail. “All right. But seems to me that the more people on this, the better.”
He would also like to hear what Erin’s mother had to say about the past, but then again, Celia might pack up their lives and disappear.
Nathan would prefer he didn’t lose Erin again. He would do whatever it took to keep her safe, and though it would break him all over again, if that meant she had to run and hide again, then he would wish her all the best.
