Nathan turned and gave her a look. Please say no more.

But he recognized the defiance in her eyes. Maybe she was right. The more they got out of this man, the better.

Chief Hadlow said nothing. Instead, he stared at Erin. Trying to intimidate her? “As I said before, I’m on your side. Your team. I’m a good guy here.” Then he shifted back to Nathan and sighed. “I want to protect your father. He wouldn’t be happy with me if I let you get hurt because of this case. Please leave my state and don’t come back unless it’s with your father and those responsible for shooting him have been charged.”

Chief Hadlow stood, letting Nathan know he was finished. Nathan rose and Erin joined him. Hadlow thrust out his hand and Nathan shook the strong, reassuring grip.

With everything in him, Nathan wanted to believe him.

“Can I ask you one more question?” Nathan crossed his arms.

Hadlow angled his head. “You can ask.”

In other words, asking the question didn’t mean he would answer. “How many lives are at stake here?”

The man subtly sagged and glanced between Nathan and Erin. “I’m concerned about at least two more.”
