He glanced over my shoulder into the bathroom and I swallowed thickly. Vito moved forward as if he was going to step inside, but I laid a hand on his chest and gripped his shirt.
“Can we go now?” I asked. “Please, Daddy?”
Vito stopped and gazed down at me. There was something in his eyes that I couldn’t decipher. Please don’t ask me anything.
“Let’s go,” he said. “The car’s waiting.”
He’s so soft on me. Look at him. He’s going against every instinct he has and trusting me. I’m the worst kind of human.
I took some of the things he was carrying and ignored his protests. Right now, I needed to hold him. I slipped my hand into his and laid my head on his arm.
This might be the last time either of us was alive. I wanted to hold onto that. Forever.
