“Yeah, don’t be a stranger!” Joe hugged her after Rhianna. “You’re more than welcome at our wedding.”

“Oh, I don’t know…” Maya said hesitantly. This was a step too far into the Trescott family, maybe.

“Yes, there’s room for more,” Rhianna agreed.

Sam walked out with Maya to her parents’ car.

She hugged him like she had Joe, only Sam held her longer, his hug firmer. She could have sworn her family went silent in the car. She kissed him on the cheek, and he kissed her back, and as she withdrew — reluctantly — she couldn’t quite make eye contact, only smiling at his shoes. He felt so good to hold and even with the mixed aroma of barbecue and smoke, she could still smell the lingering scent of his aftershave.

“Goodnight, Maya,” Sam said, holding the car door open. She slid into the back with the kids.

“Goodnight, Sam,” she said, pulling on the seatbelt. “See you soon.” He closed the passenger door, and her father pulled the car away. Maya watched as he stood and waved.

“Sam’s nice,” Fern said, from the front of the car.

“Yes, he is,” Maya replied, hoping her tone appeared neutral.

“They’re all lovely. What a wonderful family,” Fern continued. Maya could tell she was a little tipsy. “I’ve had a lovely afternoon; I’m so pleased they invited us.”

Doug, the designated driver, nodded in agreement.

Fern was not the only one tipsy. Maya blamed the alcohol for the mixed emotions she felt about Sam swirling around her head.

He was more than nice.

He’s…

He’s Chloe’s dad! It would get complicated.
