“I’m a Ravenmoon,” I added with conviction. “My grandfather has led us fairly for many years. We want only peace and prosperity for our kind. Don’t think you’ll receive the same from Laurel and her ilk if they get their way.”

“It’s time,” William said to the other girls. “Make your choice.”

Violet walked to my side right away. Silvia did, too. But some of the other girls were more reluctant. Loba slid over to Laurel’s side, as did Nanette. My heart sank. How could they pick her? My words had meant nothing.

But, slowly, the remaining girls walked to my side, shooting Laurel dirty looks. It seemed she’d made more enemies than I could have known.

Violet gave my hand a squeeze.

I had won.

“Seven to three,” William said, running a hand down his trim beard. “Wren wins.”

I could only smile and turn to Ares. “I pick you,” I said.

I expected him to seem happy, or at least give a smile, but he simply nodded before turning and walking away.
