“And where are you going?”

“To figure out what the hell is wrong with our new chief examiner. That,” I point toward the elevator, “is not normal behavior. Not from any M.E., and especially not from her.”

“You wouldn’t have followed Chant on a bad day,” he calls out as I release the door. “You’re making this personal, Arch!”

“Yup!”

I jog across the tile floor and hit the elevator button with my heart in my throat. I don’t know why; I don’t know what the fuck she has inside her that calls to me. I don’t know how she can pull these behaviors from me. But I sure as hell know I’m not letting her run away and block me out.

She’s already under my skin. She’s already changed the very essence of who I am.

So now, I’m gonna force her to stand up and follow this through.

I won’t accept no for an answer.
