“We’ll see.” Pushing the familiar pang of disappointment aside, I knew letting myself fall for Logan again was a mistake, but my heart just wouldn’t let me listen.
Leading us out of the airport, I could already hear Jade’s thoughts bouncing around inside her head the further away we grew. Doing my best not to look back at him, I put my finger up to silence her. “Don’t even say it.”
Laughing out loud, both Jade and Taylor shoved each other playfully. “You like him!” Jade sings, sounding like a schoolgirl.
“It’s not like that,” I lied.
“Oh? And what’s it like?”
“We have history,” I trailed off, looking over my shoulder.
“And…”
“That’s it. It went nowhere.” I whispered, trying my best to hide my feelings. “He was the jock, and I was thedisabled girl,” I offered, repeating the line the mean girls used to feed me. “That’s all there is to it.”
Growing interested, Jade moves closer. “Sounds like there’s a lot more to it.”
Flustered with emotion, I didn’t know how I felt about Logan. “Yeah, well, we never had the chance to find out.”
“What happened?”
“He got drafted to the Niagara Knights and moved.” My eyes dropped with sadness. “He said he’d keep in contact, and he did, at first, but somewhere along the way we kept missing each other’s calls. Eventually, it got to where the calls just stopped.”
“Sounds to me like there’s something there?”
“I don’t know. I doubt anything’s changed. He’s still with the team, which means there’s not a lot of time for anything else.”Besides, I’m sure Logan will have plenty of beautiful girls on his arm during this cruise.
“Who says it has to go anywhere, Steph? Just have some fun with him while the two of you are here and see where it goes. Technology has come a long way over the years. I’m sure this time around it’ll be easier to keep in touch,” she said, offering reassurance.
Mulling it over, I wondered if things could be different, now that we’re adults. “Enough about all that right now. I need a drink!”
“I hear that,” Jade sang.
“We need to check in first,” Taylor jumped in, being the responsible one. “Then we can drink.”
Jade rushed towards us with excitement. “I love the way you think,” she sang, grabbing Taylor’s hands to make her sway like they were dancing.
“I’m wondering what was in those drinks from the plane,” I snickered at her drunken display.
“Don’t even let me get started on you, Sweet Girl.”
A wave of heat came over me. “How did you see that?” I snapped, but I couldn’t keep the laughter at bay.
“What’s going on?” Taylor asked, in confusion.
“The contact name she put in his phone.”
“Sweet Girl?” Taylor asked, the amusement clear.
“Shut up,” I whined.
“Oh, Sweet Girl,” Jade cooed.
“Shut up. He’ll hear you,” I said, hushing her as I looked back over my shoulder. “Let’s go before he notices you two making a fool out of yourselves,” I said, making sure he wasn’t still watching.
