Nick moved past her. “Where’s Edgar?”

“Th-they went through that door. I heard it lock.”

“They?” Caleb said much louder than Nick had talked. “Who was in here?”

Nick ducked past her and went to the door, tried it, then kicked it hard.

Mama reached them with the security guard. “Tell us what happened, Laura.”

From the terror on Mama’s face, Laura knew she’d feared Laura might disappear. Vanish never to be seen again. Even with strong men at hand.

“One noise from you, and I’m going to kill your precious mama.”

For the first time ever, or at least more profoundly than ever, she understood Mama’s fears, Jilly’s fears, because now they were her fears.

Whether she faced them and spoke of them or not, they were all in deadly danger.
