She and Beckham halted and turned. “Excuse me?”
The officer shrugged at Eliza’s question, a slightly chagrined look on her face. “You said the closing song was about to play. What song would it be?”
“Oh.” Eliza glanced at Beckham.
“I’d say…” Beckham smiled down at her. “‘It Had to Be You.’”
Eliza stared at him, his answer pinging through her and settling in just the right spot.
The officer pointed her darkened flashlight at them and nodded. “Solid choice. You two have a good night.”
The officer turned to walk away, but Eliza was still staring at Beckham. “‘It Had to Be You.’”
He lifted a brow. “You approve?”
“You watchedWhen Harry Met Sally,” she said, delighted.
“I’ve watched it three times in the last two weeks. That Nora Ephron was a genius.”
For some reason, that felt like the most romantic thing he’d said all night. When he’d been ignoring her at work, he’d been watching one of her favorite movies. He’d been thinking about her as much as she had thought about him.
She leaned in to him, putting her head on his shoulder, a feeling of contentment moving through her. She didn’t need a man to be happy.
But she’d found the right person to be happy with. “It had to be you.”
He hummed a few bars of the song and then tightened his arm around her and kissed the top of her head. “You and no one else, Eli.”
They took a slow walk back into the city and found their way to the same diner where they’d first talked about the movie.
They had a strawberry cheesecake shake to share.
And a life to start.
