Page 4 of The Beta: Part One

“Fair enough,” I say to her, “We take breakfast early, lunch is typically done on an individual basis. Jasper sleeps later than we do, he’ll let you know what he wants. We don’t have a regular dinner schedule, and one or all of us will likely be away often, but you’ll still be expected to prepare something for when we do come home. We’ll heat it up, so you won’t be in the kitchen all day.”

She nods in understanding, and I continue, “We need to put your number into our phones so we can contact you. Jasper will also text you if he needs anything. Don’t bother him, he’ll seek you out if he needs to. You’ll be expected to do any task he doesn’t want to do himself. He likes to keep things tidy on his own, but he might ask you to help keep up the laundry.”

She raises a hand to interrupt, “I need to know how he likes things folded. It’s important.”

It is important. Jasper has gone on three rampages when we’ve folded towels incorrectly, because you can absolutely fold them wrong and it will ruin a whole day. Kaleb says he’ll show her the linen closet, and how Jasper likes things folded when they go to the laundry room. She nods again and waits for the next round of instructions.

She hands me her phone on the way out the door when Kaleb leads her away to finish the grand tour. I open her contact list and see just four contacts: Mother, Father, Food, and Party Planners.

Weird, but whatever. She doesn’t really look like the type of girl to need a party planner, but she doesn’t look capable of half the shit in her file, either. I guess we’ll have to wait and see exactly what kind of girl she is.

I put in our numbers and send out a text to each of the guys so they know this is her number. I have a look around her apps and things, but there’s not much. She has a bank app, and the amount in the account is modest at best. The most exciting thing I find is a collection of recipes saved as screenshots. Even her email is cleared out with the exception of her placement notification and the typical spam everyone has.

I go to the security room, technically it’s an office, but all the security feeds from the house and property lead to several monitors here. We also keep a couple file cabinets here, but anything relating to work is kept outside the house. I watch Kaleb and the beta move from screen to screen until they’re back in the kitchen. After a few minutes she’s knocking on the door and I motion her inside. I want her to see that we have the entire property on surveillance so she knows she’ll be watched.

“If you’ve finished with my phone I’d like to take it back. I’d like to send your omega some menus for approval before I begin dinner prep. Please.” The please is an obvious afterthought.

“No problem,” I hand it to her, “I’m sure Jasper will let you know what he likes. Do you think you’ll be able to find everything on your own? No one will be available to hold your hand.” I don’t want to give her the idea that we’re bringing her in with open arms. We don’t trust her or want her and the sooner she understands that the sooner we can get her out of here.

“I'll be fine. No worries,” she says, and leaves without rising to my bait.

That's fine, I can think of a hundred other ways to make her miserable enough to bail on this placement.
