“And when is the trial?” Kari said, finally participating in the conversation.
Jaz shrugged. “It’s coming up. I already got my outfits picked out.”
Gab snickered.
Kari nodded. “Listen, I wanna say I know shit’s been crazy since we lost Pop, but the family gotta stay strong.”
Eris chuckled. “You sound just like him.”
“I mean…he’s here. He’s with us and he’s in us, know what I mean? So we gon’ keep this shit goin’. Aight?”
Everyone agreed. Everyone except Gab, of course.
“So tell me something, Knight.” She paused to narrow her eyes. “How you likin’ the new place?”
He narrowed his right back. “It’s cool. We’re still getting settled.” He looked around the table. “We gon’ have everybody over soon so y’all can see it.”
Gab nodded. “And what about the happy couple? How’s married life?”
Kari clenched his jaw again. “It’s good.”
“I’m so happy for y’all,” she gushed. It was fake as fuck, but she kept on. “There’s nothing like the beginning. All that love and romance.” She grinned. “The calm before the storm.”
Jakari stood abruptly, startling everybody. “You know what? Fuck this. I ain’t got time for this bullshit.”
We all watched him storm off, confused and bewildered.
I stuffed the last piece of my cornbread in my mouth and got up to follow him.
Whatever was going on, I was about to get to the bottom of it.
