“Might’ve.”
I shook my head in disgust. “Your uncle hugged me at the hospital, too. Hugged me like I was family.”
“Niggas will do that when they ain’t loyal. Only person he was loyal to was my pops.” He rubbed his temples. “He was working on my mama, too. That’s probably who she was talking to when you heard her on the phone that day.”
“She knew?”
“Nah. She wouldn’t have went against me like that. She was a pawn.”
I snorted. “If you say so.”
“I know you feel a way about her, and I don’t blame you. But with this, I believe her.”
“Okay. That’s you.”
He didn’t respond to that. Instead, he said, “How you feelin’? I scared you, right?”
“I was nervous, but I made it. Thanks to you.”
“Nah, but you woulda never been in this position if it wasn’t for me.”
I stripped out of my clothes and sat next to him on the bed. “However I got here, I’m here. And because of you, I’m safe. Okay?”
“Okay.”
Tired from the events of the day, we fell asleep in each other’s arms.
