There’s a sadness that grips my gut when I think of the future and her not in it with me.

“Of course not.” I laugh under my breath. It’s absurd for Matteo to think I’d tell Olivia the truth. He knows I’m good at keeping secrets. Unless they’re my family, I don’t trust them easily. And while I don’t think Olivia would betray me, I don’t know who she might confide in.

I’ve had a lifetime of learning to keep secrets, of hiding who I am, and that I run the mafia.

“And she won’t find out,” I reiterate to Matteo. I don’t expect him to divulge our little secret.

“What about work? When she starts showing, is she going to be able to keep it a secret that the kid is yours?” Matteo asks.

He’s always had doubts. Of her loyalty, whether she was up for the job. Hell, he didn’t think that I should hire her.

I’m glad I didn’t listen to him because I might not be having a kid in a few months if I did.

“I’ve got it handled.” He needs to worry less about my personal life and more about Luka Caruso and to make sure that rat stays far from the compound and far from Olivia.
