This is why I swore I’d never get married. The job is too dangerous. I make too many enemies in my line of work.

And marrying Etta for a cease-fire between our families would never have lasted.

Etta and I weren’t in love.

Dorian brandishes his gun, pointing it straight at my head. “Hands up!” he shouts.

He’s overly zealous. He probably hasn’t had a kill in days, maybe even weeks. At least not as rich as me.

And I’m not talking about money. Not literally anyhow. Although I’m sure my head is worth top dollar to him, he wants his revenge because I broke his baby girl’s heart.

At least, I assume that’s why he’s here.

Otherwise, he’d be attacking the compound if it’s about power and money.

I throw my hands into the air. “Don’t shoot.” I step away from the house to keep Dorian or his men from noticing the baseball or glove buried against the side of the house.

“Where is she?”

Are they looking for Karina?

Why?

What does she have to do with Dorian and his crew?

“It’s just me here, boys. You really are trying to overcompensate for something. I’d guess it’s the size of your dicks,” I say, trying to distract them.

I catch a brief glimpse of Karina. At least, I think it’s her. There’s a figure behind the SUV. It’s too tall to be Ashton, and the build is a woman. Etta wouldn’t accompany her father on his dirty business dealings.

“We heard you married some whore. Where is she?” Dorian asks.

When I don’t answer, he gestures two of his men to the cottage. “Search the house. Tear it apart if you have to.”

Two of his thugs stomp inside, destroying precious memories of my past. They’re looking for Karina. They want her dead.

Glass shatters against the walls and floors.

They’re tearing apart the house, destroying everything inside that belongs to me.

Where the hell do they think she’s hiding?

Karina darts from the SUV to the opposite side of the house.

“You boys are barking up the wrong tree,” I say, trying to distract them.

“Did you see that?” Dorian shouts.

Shit.

“Probably a coyote,” I say with a shrug. “We get them all the time.”

Dorian and his second in command rush to the opposite side after Karina.

I can easily take two men at once. Six without a weapon is more of a challenge.

I have to move quickly before Dorian and his second find Karina and Ashton. I jut my leg out, sweeping the shorter and stockier of the two men to the ground.

Using my palm, I slam my hand upward into the other man’s nose and knee him in the groin, grabbing his gun as he doubles over.
