“Like you haven’t killed men for less?” Alessandro’s wry grin reappears. “By all means, bring the boy into the house, but I’m not going to spare another room for the child. If he requires a separate bed, she can sleep with you and give up her bed for him. That shouldn’t be a problem. Right? You are newlyweds. You should be thrilled to have your paws all over one another.”
Alessandro seems overly ecstatic about this new arrangement, which makes my stomach flop.
I wasn’t planning on bringing Karina into my bedroom.
I like my sleep.
And hogging all the covers at night.
I intended the marriage to be a sham. Sure, we were wed, but we didn’t have to sleep together. We would be one of those couples who live separate lives, under the same roof.
“You’re dismissed,” Alessandro says when I don’t respond to his remarks.
I retreat from his office, foregoing asking Giovan for a ride to the hospital. Taking my vehicle is pointless since Francesco will insist on accompanying us.
He’s as much a bodyguard for her as a spy for Alessandro. It’s doubtful he’ll let her out of his sight.
I walk out to the main road and grab a cab.
My fingers tremble, and I shove them in my pocket, not wanting to feel the least bit uneasy about what’s going to go down.
Will Karina hate me for bringing her son into this life?
She tried to shield him from me.
Why?
Is it because I’m a beast?
She’s barely witnessed that side of me and the monster that gets unleashed. It only surfaces when interrogating a suspect or when I’m given orders to execute.
