I snatch her keys from her hands and keep her close against me while I unlock the front door. I don’t trust that she won’t run.

Just as I unlock the front door, the handle turns before I have a chance to open it.

The front door is thrust open, and those deep baby blues stare back at me.

They’re twins?

Karina is wearing a long ivory sweater and leggings. There’s a smear of blood on her shirt that I hadn’t noticed earlier.

Thankfully, the officer at the courthouse didn’t see it either.

“Karina?” I say.

I glance from Karina to the girl shoved between us, befuddled.

They could have royally fucked with me.

She certainly tried.

Karina steps out into the hallway around her sister. “Please leave my sister out of this. She was just trying to help me.”

Grabbing Karina by the arm, I leave her sister at the front door. She’s not my responsibility to deal with, and I don’t need two of them causing me trouble.

“Say goodbye.” I lug Karina’s suitcase in one hand for the stairwell. “Francesco and Giovan are waiting for us.”

Behind me, the girls exchange a brief hug.

I don’t listen to whatever few words are exchanged. It’s not my place to eavesdrop, but I make sure they don’t switch clothes or try other asinine tactics to trip me up.

A moment later, Karina accompanies me down the stairs.

“Are you mad?” Karina asks. She walks beside me, keeping up with my pace.

“You made me look like a fool. There will be repercussions,” I warn. She can’t expect to humiliate me and not have to deal with the consequences.

I place the hand on the small of her back and feel her shudder.
