Standing outside, I clutch Ashton’s hand in mine, keeping him close against me. It’s hard not to feel paranoid.

Aurielo is out there, hunting me down.

We have only the clothes on our backs.

I bought two bus tickets and plan on changing routes again, just to ensure that we can’t be tracked.

I toss my phone into the garbage. I can’t take any chances since Aurielo figured out the phone number belongs to me. If there is any chance that he can track me, I have to be careful and be two steps ahead of him.

Waiting for the bus, Aurielo breezes in like nothing happened.

“Hey, Ashton!” Aurielo’s eyes are cold, but the smile on his face makes Ash fall right into his trap, hook, line, and sinker.

Shit.

“Aurielo!” Ashton squeals and runs to him.

It’s taken no time for the two of them to bond.

I should have been more careful and kept Ashton away. But I did try to hide him from Aurielo.

What more could I do?

“How about we head home?” Aurielo asks, ruffling Ash’s hair after a firm hug. He keeps an arm wrapped around my son.

I get a glimpse of his gun in his holster.

My mouth is dry.

I feel threatened. I’m sure that’s the point.

“Come on, Mommy,” Ashton says, waiting for me to join them.

Reluctantly, I sigh and trudge behind, joining Aurielo back at his car. At least Francesco isn’t driving. I take a little relief in not having to face him, too.

“Backseat, kiddo,” Aurielo orders. He opens the car door.

At least there’s a booster seat for my son.

Ashton climbs into the booster and secures his seatbelt.

“You have your own car,” Aurielo says and slams the backdoor shut.

“What?” I scoff. He isn’t really taking my son from me. Is he?

His gazes tightens, and he folds his arms across his chest. “If you want to see your son, you’ll meet me at home. Do you need the address?” Aurielo asks.

I can’t abandon Ashton. “Let me drive with you.” We can worry about the car later.

“That’s not a good idea. I don’t trust you,” Aurielo says. He glances me over.

What does he think I’m going to do?

“Please, Aurielo, let me be with my son.”
