“He’s a few years younger but just as protective as a big brother.” I glance from Karina to the water fountain. The water glistens under the sun. It’s calming to watch. Peaceful.

“Do you want to invite your sister to the courthouse tomorrow when we get married?”

“That’s not a good idea,” she says.

“Worried she might trick me into marrying her?” I quip, shooting a glance at her.

“I’m sorry about that,” Karina apologizes. “I didn’t expect Ivy to knock my ass to the floor and take my place.”

I cringe at her remark, and my hands bunch into fists at the memory of my hands on her sister. “She hurt you?” I shift on the swing, facing Karina.

How could I have thought Ivy was Karina? Her mouthiness and sass weren’t the least bit like Karina’s. Sure, she has a mouth on her, but there’s a noticeable difference in the way they hold themselves.

“It wasn’t on purpose,” she says, defending her sister. “Ivy was trying to protect me.”

“Protecting doesn’t equate to hurting,” I seethe. Glancing her over, I don’t see any telltale signs of injury. Until she told me, I had no idea what transpired between the two of them. “Did she leave any bruises?”

Karina quirks a grin. “I haven’t checked my ass out in the mirror, but I’m sure it’s fine. For a brute like you, I’m surprised you care.”

“Brute?”

Is that what she thinks of me?

She reaches for my chest and pats her hand against my suit coat. “I meant it as a compliment,” she says.

Karina isn’t the least bit afraid of me.

I want to pull her against me, bring her into my lap, and press my lips tight against hers.

But she deserves better. Karina has no idea of the atrocities I’ve committed. She’s only seen a glimpse at the hotel. The whole picture would destroy her.

I’m a monster.
