Instead of spanking my ass and mumbling a thanks as he walked away, like I half-expected, Ryker settled beside me on the bed and drew me closer until he cocooned me, Big Spoon style.

“You’re always thinking too much,” he said.

“Would you say that’s my only major flaw?” I asked, with only the barest note of teasing.

I felt him shake his head. “No. I’d say your biggest flaw is trying to take the throne.”

“Well, well.” I chuckled. “I could have bet money on you saying that.”

“Sloane…you can do anything you want. I know you think you need the throne to survive, but you have the ability to do whatever you want, wherever you want. Why do you want this?”

I wanted to see his questions as a ploy, a way to keep me off-kilter so he could use it to his advantage, but I also wanted to think that we were past all that now.

Seemed I had a lot of wants, and not a lot of time to see them materialize.

“I’m sorry. I’m seeing this through to the end.” I snuggled against him, wiggling my ass for emphasis. “I don’t plan on dropping out.”

“Well, good,” he huffed into my ear. “I enjoy competing against you.”

His admission might have surprised me if we hadn’t just fucked like rabid animals. Because honestly, that was the craziest thing I’d ever done in my life. Not because of how much I enjoyed it, but because he was my enemy, and I’d given him access to me in the most intimate way possible.

“Oh, shut up,” I told him.

“Would you rather I lie to you?”

I’d rather he gave up the throne and tell me he needed me. Or that he wanted me as more than just a spur in his side to get him through the Inferno.

Yup, I had a whole lot of wants, and only time would tell if I ever saw them materialize.
