Ryker stepped out of nowhere and blocked my path.
I skidded to a halt and Chupey growled.
“If you know what’s best for you,” I started. “You won’t get in the way of my familiar and food.”
Ryker smirked and stepped to the side. “Go ahead, Chupe. We won’t be long.”
Chupey hesitated, glancing between me and the food.
“It’s okay, Chupe,” Ryker said. “On my life, I wish her no harm…right now.”
I rolled my eyes.
Chupey remained frozen and visibly torn.
“Go, Chupey. I’ll be fine,” I said. Poor thing just needed some bacon.
With a pained last look, Chupey trotted ahead and disappeared into the dining hall.
“On a scale of one to ten, how angry are you?” Ryker asked.
“I’m at a motherfucking eleven.”
Ryker nodded.
“And you? How do you feel about them using our familiars as bait?”
“I’m livid.”
“Really?” I raised an eyebrow. “Because from where I’m standing, you look pretty relaxed.”
Ryker turned to me then, fully, and met my gaze. The green in his eyes flashed and flickered like they held the fires of Hell, and in the next blink he had me pinned to the wall.
“I’m livid,” he repeated. “Once I’m Lucifer, S’gor will pay for this.”
I lifted my chin. “Once I’m Lucifer, you mean.”
He narrowed his eyes and his gaze dropped to my lips. He leaned down, impossibly close, and my memories of his mouth on mine rose up and made warmth spread through my body.
I licked my lips.
Ryker stared at my mouth, transfixed by the movement. I couldn’t let him kiss me. If he laid those plump lips on me, I’d dry hump him in this very hallway. Too much stress, too much built-up tension…I’d erupt and then I’d have to deal with his smug face until I finally beat him.
I cleared my throat and looked away. “Is there something you wanted?”
“There’s a whole lot of things I want right now.” He leaned in, pressing his hips forward so his erection dug into me.
“Jesus…”
“I’m not Jesus.” Ryker chuckled and shook his head. “I’m not God, either. But you say the word, Sloane, you bob that pretty little head of yours, and I can be your god tonight.”
Part of me wanted to whimper and melt into his warmth. Heat already pooled low in my belly. It would be so easy to say yes. So easy to fall in bed with him and get lost in pleasure.
And not so easy in the morning. He’d be such a pain in the ass the next day.
“You were hanging out, waiting to intercept me in the hallway like some two-bit villain from a B-list movie. Why?”
“A two-bit villain?” He raised an eyebrow.
