She palmed his cheek. “I know those feelings.”
“I wish I hadn’t reacted the way I did. I can’t go back in time and change it. I can only ask for forgiveness.”
She covered her mouth and belched.
Not a good sign for what might be in her future for the evening.
“I can forgive you.”
“I’m glad,” he said. “Now, why don’t you let me help you up to bed and get you a big glass of water?”And a bucket, but he opted not to mention the latter.
“It’s probably best if I not sleep in your bed with you.”
“I’ll stay in the guest room,” he said. “Trust me when I say you’ll be more comfortable in my room. Where the bathroom is closer.”
She belched again. “Okay.” She pushed herself to a standing position, only she wobbled on her legs and fell forward into his arms. “Oops,” she said.
He scooped her up and carried her into the house and down the hallway to the master bedroom.
His house wasn’t on the water, but he lived in town, and he enjoyed the easy access to restaurants and the beach. Not to mention, he owned it outright. If he everdidget married, which wasn’t likely at this stage in his life, he would absolutely give it up and buy a place on the water or a bigger house outside of town. But for now, it worked for him.
“Here you go.” Carefully, he tugged off her jeans and tucked her under the sheets. He sat on the edge of the bed and brushed her hair away from her face. He’d fucked up big this time. “I’m really sorry. My behavior was horrible. When you said birth control was a non-issue, I shouldn’t have assumed it was about me.”
“I would have done the same thing if the tables were turned,” she said softly.
“I know you might not remember this part of the evening in the morning, and I’ll likely have to repeat it, but I’m sorry you lost your baby. That breaks my heart.”
“Thank you.” She took his hand and pressed it against the center of her chest. “I’m sorry we didn’t get to finish.”
He chuckled. “We have plenty of time for that.” He leaned over and kissed her forehead. “Close your eyes and sleep.”
Her lashes fluttered. “The room is spinning.” She bolted upright, flipping the covers to the side and then stumbling toward the bathroom.
It would be a long night.
