She glanced over her shoulder.
Kathy screamed obscenities at Emmerson as he slapped the handcuffs on and Mirandized her.
“Melinda’s pregnant?” Emmett asked with an arched brow.
“Shit. You can’t tell anyone. Chad doesn’t know yet.”
“Wow. That’s exciting. You’re going to have to tell me when we’re on our boating excursion to the Bahamas how and why she told you and not her husband first.” He cupped her face. “Are you sure you’re okay? I’m so sorry I had to let you leave with that lunatic.”
She curled her fingers around his wrists. “I’m fine. You did what you had to do in order to save all of us.”
He kissed her lips tenderly. “I care about you. I know it’s crazy to say that because we barely know each other, but I have real, deep feelings for you, and I want to explore them.”
Sirens blared. Red lights flashed in the sky as a couple of police cars raced to the scene.
She ignored all of that and focused on the man who made her heart beat a little faster. “I want to explore my feelings, too.”
He tilted his head. “May I kiss you like I mean it right here on the side of the road in front of a couple of my brothers and a few colleagues?”
She wrapped her arms around his shoulders and leaned into his strong body. “Before any lip-lock happens, I need to thank you for saving me.”
“I didn’t do that,” he said. “Or, at least, I didn’t do that alone. I had help from my family, and from you.”
When his mouth pressed against hers, she melted into his arms. She could deny and lie to herself about a lot of things, but how hard and fast she was falling for Emmett would be impossible to hide from. The only thing she could do was let it happen.
“I’m going to have a bunch of shit to do tonight,” Emmett whispered. “I know Melinda is going to be freaked out. Maybe I should take you back there, and you can hang out with her while I take care of business. I’ll book our vacation for a couple of days.”
She stared into his warm eyes. “I need to see my parents before I do that. And make arrangements at work.”
“Tell me when you want to go, and I’ll make it happen.” He kissed her nose. “And I’d love to meet your folks, so maybe I’ll make a trip to Pensacola first.”
“I’m not sure I’m ready for that.” She dropped her head to his chest. “Can we wait until we see where we are after our trip?”
“Whatever you want. Just know that I’m here for you.”
“Thank you.” Trinity had no idea what the future held, but for the first time in a long while, she knew that her life wouldn’t be consumed by the past or by anger.
