His chest tightened as Kathy backed the vehicle to the edge of the street. “Come on. We can’t let them drive away. Talk to me.”

“Mom just pulled into the bed and breakfast. Give her a chance to go check it out.”

Emmett inched down the driveway. The second the car pulled out onto the road, he took off jogging. Not that he would chase them down the street, but he couldn’t stand that he couldn’t see Trinity anymore.

He pulled out his cell. “Add me to Mom’s call.”

“Sure thing,” Rhett said.

It took about thirty seconds for the call to connect.

“Mom? Are you there?” Emmett asked. “What’s going on?”

“Melinda’s fine,” his mother said. “Bugsy’s sitting in a car down the street. I’m waiting for backup before I take him in.”

“Let us know when he’s in custody,” Emmett said.

“You got it. Be safe,” his mother said.

“Get Emmerson to stop Kathy before the bridge.” Emmett turned and glanced up at the roof.

Rhett was already getting down.

Emmett raced toward his SUV, climbing behind the driver’s seat and hitting the start button.

Rhett jumped into the passenger seat and held up his cell. “I’ve got Emmerson on the horn.”

“Emmerson, see if you can call the bridge and ask them to raise it. I don’t want to risk them getting off the island.” Emmett punched the gas. By his calculations, it had been four minutes since Trinity and Kathy had pulled out of the driveway.

They could be at least a mile or two down the road.

The bridge was five miles away.

“Consider it done,” Emmerson said.

“Where are you?’ Rhett asked.

“I’m three miles from the house, and I can see them in my rearview,” Emmerson said.

“There they are.” Rhett indicated. “Let’s box them in.”

“We need to be careful. That bitch has a loaded gun pointed at my girlfriend.”

“Oh. Is that what you’re calling her now? Does Mom know?” Rhett teased.

“If Ma knew, she probably wouldn’t have willingly gone to Melinda’s. She would have sent one of you so she could have saved her. But, no, Trinity is mine to save.”

“She’s not a possession,” Rhett said.

“You know what I mean.”

“The bridge is going up,” Rhett said. “Slow down and ease in behind them in the other lane.”

“You got it.”

Emmett rested his weapon on his lap as he rolled his vehicle to a stop about three car lengths behind Kathy and Trinity. “Ready?”

“I’m ready,” Emmerson said.
