Page 70 of Mine to Save

“A few hours from here.” Kathy turned and curled her fingers around the door handle. “We should really get going.”

“Let me get my purse and cell.”

“Leave the phone. Emmett could be tracking that.”

“You know what I don’t understand?” Trinity said. “Why would Emmett do this? He didn’t know me. My dad. My family. It doesn’t make sense to me.”

“I don’t know. Maybe he wanted to make a name for himself. Maybe he wanted to be the one to catch the killer, so he hired someone to do it.” Kathy took Trinity by the hand. “Come on. Let’s go.”

Emmett had warned her that Kathy would want her to leave right away, and the point was to keep her talking for as long as she could.

“Why didn’t your cousin or his friends come with you? Isn’t he concerned about your safety with Bugsy still out there?”

“He’s been busy doing other things so we can make sure you’re no longer in danger.” Kathy grabbed her by the arm, then raced back to the front door and yanked it open. “Stop asking so many questions and get moving,” she snapped.

“I’m sorry, Kathy. I’m scared and confused, and I don’t understand why your cousin would send you here alone if he’s concerned that Emmett is so dangerous.”

“I don’t have time for this,” Kathy mumbled as she opened her bag and pulled out a gun. She pointed it at Trinity. “Let’s go.”

Trinity gasped and took a step back. “What the hell are you doing? Why do you have a weapon, Kathy?” She clutched her chest. She could feel her heart pounding.

“Put the gun down.” Emmett’s voice bellowed from somewhere behind her. It calmed her for a brief second.

“You stupid bitch.” Kathy pointed the gun right in Trinity’s face. “Now, I’m going to have to have Bugsy kill some innocent people. Like his ex, Melinda.” She jerked the gun at Emmett.

“That’s not going to happen,” Emmett said with a confident tone.

Kathy wrapped her free hand around Trinity’s arm, pulling her close as she shoved the gun against her side.

Trinity groaned, and tears welled in her eyes. She couldn’t let anything happen to Melinda and her unborn child. “I’ll go with you if you promise not to hurt Melinda.”

“Oh. Is she your new best friend?” Kathy asked. “Do you bond over bagels while sitting on the dock watching boats go by?”

Trinity’s jaw dropped open. “You’ve been here this entire time. Watching me. Us.”

Kathy shrugged. “You should have let this go. If you could have done that, we wouldn’t be in this situation.”

“You’re the one with the problem.” Emmett inched closer, holding his weapon high.

Kathy laughed. “The only issue I have is how to wrap all this up so it doesn’t come back on me. But I’m not worried. Now, Trinity and I are going to walk out of here, and you’re not going to do anything about it. If you do, Melinda is dead. And don’t think that’s not the case because Bugsy is with her right now, waiting for my call.”

“Fuck.”Emmett stood in the center of the front door and watched as Trinity climbed into the passenger seat of Kathy’s car.

“Mom’s five minutes from Melinda’s place,” Rhett’s voice crackled in Emmett’s ear. “Emmerson is ready to follow. Don’t worry.”

Easier said than done.

He tapped the earpiece. “I’m fucking freaking out. Do we have eyes on the bed and breakfast?”

“No. And Melinda isn’t answering her cell.”

“I don’t like this.”

“As soon as they pull out of the driveway, you and I can be on our way to the B&B. I have Find My Phone working with Emmerson.”

Emmett knew his brother was right. If the tables were turned, he’d be saying all the same things. But it killed him that he had to watch Trinity drive away with a woman holding a loaded gun on her. That hurt his heart in ways he hadn’t expected.
