“Why?”

Emmett had a bad feeling about where this was going. He scribbled on the paper.

Play along, whatever it is.

Trinity nodded.

“My cousin learned that Bugsy is friends with Emmett, the police officer that is pretending to help you. He’s in on it. You’re not safe.”

Trinity gasped. “How can you be sure?”

“I have pictures of them. I’ll text you. Just make sure he doesn’t see them. I’m worried about your safety.”

“Hang on. It came through.” Trinity swiped the screen, and an image of Emmett with Bugsy on a fishing trip appeared.

Emmett scribbled on the paper.

That’s fake.

“I can’t just up and leave. That would look suspicious.”

“I’m three hours away. Give me the address of where you’re staying. We can say we’re going out to get a bite to eat and just leave. We’ll drive down to Fort Lauderdale, meet with that FBI agent, and tell her what we know,” Kathy said. “I’m so sorry I didn’t believe you.”

Emmett was amazed at how composed Trinity remained throughout the conversation. He wrote more notes on the paper as Rhett motioned for them to keep the call going.

Tell her it’s okay. Ask her what else her cousin found out about me. How dangerous am I?

“It’s okay, Kath. Even my parents thought I was nuts,” Trinity said. “What else did you find out about Emmett? Because he seems so nice. So genuine. I thought he was on my side.”

“I’m sure he wanted you to believe that. But he’s on the take somehow. My cousin hasn’t put it all together yet, but he’s sure Emmett is not concerned about helping you clear your father’s name. If anything, he’s the reason your father was shot that day.”

Emmett wanted to reach through the phone and strangle Kathy.

“I have to stop and get gas. Text me your location, and I’ll see you soon.”

The phone went dead.

“Not enough time,” Rhett said. “We might be able to ping a hundred-mile radius, but she didn’t stay on long enough for my software to work.”

“She knew we were listening,” Emmett said. “She had to, and I’ll bet she’s not three hours away. I’m sure she’s in town somewhere looking for us.”

“I have to agree,” Rhett said. “Text her this address.”

“Are you sure you want her coming to your mother’s house?” Trinity asked.

“I’m not having her go anywhere else,” Rhett said. “We can control the situation here.”

Shawn stood. “My sister sounds on edge. Worse than I’ve ever heard her before. And I don’t understand what she thinks she’s going to get away with. If she comes back, she has to know you’re on to her. That you plan on arresting her and Bugsy.”

“That’s just it. She thinks because she has Robash in her pocket, she’s safe,” Emmett said. “But she doesn’t know that Cotania is in Fort Lauderdale right now on the pretext of having a meeting with Robash about something else. In reality, she’s being questioned about her role in all of this. She’s going down. We’ve got all the evidence, and we turned it over.”

“It’s all about timing,” Rhett said.

“Give me your phone so I can send the text.” Emmett held out his hand.

Trinity handed it over.

Trinity:Here is the address of where I’m staying. When does the GPS say you’ll be here?
