A ledger of dates, times, and places. It didn’t make sense. Yet.

And a note to a woman by the name of Trinity Hughes with some contact information.

Emmett took pictures of everything before stuffing it all back into the envelope. He knew damn well that he and his mother’s little local police department would be cut out of the loop about as fast as the feds had taken that kill shot.

He still couldn’t believe they’d done that so quickly. They didn’t even give Jeff a warning. Granted, the man had a loaded weapon pointed in their direction…

“Do you believe him?” his mother asked.

“I don’t know,” Emmett admitted. “There was something about him that makes me want to look into his story a little more closely.”

“If there are no more murders, they’re going to believe they got their man. And to be honest, that will make sense.”

“Unless he was right, and he’s being set up.”

“But why would someone do that?”

Emmett had no idea, but he intended to find out, and he thought he’d start with contacting the daughter.
