Knox essentially operated with two emotions—happy or angry. There was nothing in between, and he certainly never felt sad or depressed or even melancholy. That sort of thing wasn’t tolerated in the military, and he’d learned to hide his feelings well.

Until now.

He let out a long breath. “I don’t even know where to begin.”

“How about by coming home?” she suggested. “Your father and I were just going to order some dinner and we have no plans for the entire weekend. I know it will take you a couple of hours, but…we’re here.”

“Actually, I’m only about an hour away. I was already in Virginia and my plans suddenly changed so…”

“Okay then. You get here as soon as you can and we’ll order some food for you too.” She paused. “Do you want to stay on the phone while you drive? Do you need to talk?”

Did he?

“Um…no. No, it’s okay. I’ll see you soon, Mom. And thanks.”

“You never have to thank me. I’m just glad we’re home when you need us.”

And honestly? So was he.
