ChapterTen
“Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.”
Unknown
It took another two weeks to see Knox again, and as excited as she was to see him, she got the distinct impression that he wasn’t nearly as thrilled to see her. It was written all over his face and if that didn’t give him away, the cool detachment in his voice during the last several phone calls did.
She knew he was frustrated with the situation and so was she. But her mom was stabilized now. She had broken her arm in the fall and after a stay in the hospital, she was back at home with Nora and hadn’t had any manic episodes in more than a week.
Maddie considered that a huge win.
Climbing out of her car at Knox’s, he greeted her with a searing kiss that was slightly reminiscent of the first one they shared after she looked him up. It was hot and wildly sexy, but lacked the intimacy they had built since then. She was determined to make things up to him this weekend, starting with them hosting a barbecue for his friends. It wasn’t what she really wanted to be doing, but she had a feeling it was something Knox needed from her.
“You made good time,” he said as he took her suitcase out of her trunk.
“No traffic, and I managed to leave a little earlier than I had planned.” Together they walked into the house and as much as she remembered not wanting to get into the habit of jumping into bed together the minute they were alone, right now it was exactly what she wanted.
Needed.
Knox put her luggage at the base of the stairs, and that’s when Maddie made her move. Turning, she quickly slipped her hand up around the back of his head and fisted her hand in his hair. “I missed you,” she murmured before claiming his lips with hers. There was a brief moment when she thought he was going to push her away, but then she heard his soft groan right before he took over. Lifting her up, he took the kiss deeper, and Maddie wrapped her legs around his waist as he carried her up the stairs.
Hell, she was so turned on she would have been happy with sex on the stairs, but she supposed the bedroom would be better.
She’d make sure of it.
The moment her feet hit the carpet, her hands snaked under his t-shirt and pushed it up and over his head. Maddie kissed his chest as her nails scored down his back before squeezing his ass.
“Maddie…” he groaned as her tongue flicked over his nipple.
She loved the sound.
Knox kicked his shoes off and together they worked on his jeans until he was standing there in nothing but his boxer briefs. Taking a step back, she openly gazed at him. “You are the sexiest man I have ever seen.” Her hand smoothed up over his abs and chest before reaching around his nape and pulling him in again for another searing kiss. She loved the way he kissed, loved the way his big hands always came up and cupped her face, just like they were doing now.
Somehow she managed to maneuver them closer to the bed before giving Knox a playful shove onto the mattress. He looked mildly surprised, but rather than acknowledge that, Maddie crawled up on him and kissed him again. This time his hands went to her bottom and held her firmly to him and she was more than happy to stay like this for a little while.
But then she wanted more.
Sitting up, she pulled her top off and tossed it to the floor. Knox’s gaze was all heat as he sat up and flipped her around so she was on her back. He kissed his way down her body, pulling her jeans and panties with him. His mouth and hands were everywhere, and it wasn’t long before Maddie realized she was no longer the one doing the seducing, now it was all Knox and that was just fine with her because the things he was doing to her were exactly what she craved.
He knew her body better than she did and as he brought her from one peak to another, she was beyond thankful that they’d found each other again and prayed they were going to get back on track after this last minor detour.
Knox moved up over her, breathlessly panting her name and whispering how much he wanted her, needed her, missed her, and Maddie’s heart felt like it was ready to burst with love for him. There wasn’t a doubt in her mind that she was still in love with him—had never stopped loving him—and prayed that he felt the same way. They’d have to talk about it eventually, but for right now, she was more than happy to be tangled up with him and let their bodies do all the talking.
“Maybe we should cancel and go upstairs and make our own little cocoon in bed and maybe watch something on Netflix,” Knox suggested the next day. They were in the kitchen, and Maddie was putting the finishing touches on the charcuterie board she made.
“Are you suggesting a little nestflix and chill?” she teased. His arms were around her and his chin was resting on her shoulder.
“Don’t you mean Netflix?”
“Nope. Nestflix. The nest is the cocoon and the flix is the movie. Nestflix.”
Behind her, he chuckled. “Someday you’re going to have to make your own dictionary and give it to me so I can understand you.” Kissing her cheek, he stepped away and put several bottles of wine out on the kitchen island.
“You understand me just fine. And besides, I don’t pull out the weird words all that often.”
“That’s not true. You used another weird word earlier when you were getting dressed.” He paused and seemed to be trying to remember it.
“Chairdrobe,” she said with a smile. “A chair on which one piles clothes that belong in the closet. I didn’t feel like living out of the suitcase, so I piled my stuff on the chair in your room.” By now she had hoped Knox would offer her a drawer of her own, but so far he hadn’t. “At home, I also have a floordrobe.”
