“Hey,” he said softly as he stepped into the room. “Are you okay?”
With only the light coming from his room, he saw her shake her head and was immediately at her side.
“What’s going on? Do you feel alright?”
One small hand reached out and grabbed his. “I don’t want to be alone tonight,” she whispered. “Would you…I mean…could you maybe stay with me?”
He immediately knew this wasn’t about anything physical; it was about loneliness and comfort. He understood because it was exactly what he needed and they’d always been in sync like that.
Leaning over, he kissed her forehead. “Give me one minute.” Then he walked across the hall and turned out his bedroom light before going back into her room. At the bedside, he shucked his jeans and slid under the blankets beside her. She was instantly in his arms and he felt her relax.
“Thank you.”
All he could do was nod.
Being with her like this probably wasn’t the smartest thing they could do, but damn if they didn’t both need it.
