These types of comments she would make about Riley are suddenly all flooding back to me. Even thinking back to my conversations with Riley over dinner. How she thought her parents weren’t proud of her or how her sister is the successful one. Riley always seems to put herself down, feeling like she is not enough for anyone. And the one night that she expressed that to me, her biggest fear, I stood up and took off.
Suddenly, I feel like I have to see her tonight. I have to make this right. I can’t let another second go by that she doesn’t know what I feel for her. I know it’s late, but I call Logan, hoping he stayed around at my parent’s house like he said he was going to.
“What’s up, man?” he answers.
“Where are you?” I ask as I run upstairs to change out of my sweatpants.
“Umm...I’m just leaving Mom and Dad’s. Why? Everything okay?”
“Any chance you can swing by my place and stay with Harper for a bit? I need to go see Riley.”
“Yeah. No problem. On my way. Everything okay with Riley?”
“Yeah. I just fucked up and need to make it right.”
“About damn time. I’m just pulling out of Mom and Dad's neighborhood. I’ll see ya soon.”
“See ya.”
After we hang up I begin pacing back and forth in my bedroom as I try to figure out what I’m going to say. I’m hoping when I see her something better comes to mind because right now I’m such a nervous wreck I can’t come up with anything good. What if I’m too late? What if I ruined the only chance of happiness I had after losing Becca? What would Becca think if she knew I made Riley feel like this? She would be kicking my ass right now, I’m sure of it. I don’t know why I was so blind to those conversations I’ve had with Becca over the years.
When I hear the front door open downstairs, I bolt down there to find Logan taking off his shoes and smiling up at me.
“What’s so funny?” I demand.
“You...being an idiot. It’s usually me. I like being on this end.”
When I reach him downstairs, I punch him in the arm. “Fuck off. What if I’m too late?”
He rolls his eyes. “Please. Everyone felt the tension between you two today. You both couldn’t stop looking at each other. She’s still in love with you.”
“I hope so.” I get my shoes on and grab my jacket. As I’m walking out the door I turn back to Logan. “Thanks, man.”
He nods his head, understanding how much this means to me.
Once I’m on my way, I look at the clock and see it’s almost ten. I know she has to get up early for school. I hope she’s not in bed yet. I don’t know if I’ll get any sleep until I can talk to her.
