The anger that’s raging inside of me is threatening to burst out. I’m clenching my fists in an effort to contain my words. I can’t believe she went for such a cheap shot. I know she was close with Becca, I know she has struggled with her death too. But to make me look like I’m doing wrong by my wife is taking it too far. I would give up everything to have Becca here again, but I also know that this is my reality. And I need to find what is best for Harper and I now. Riley has been everything to us.
“Peyton, if youevertalk about me and Becca like that again, you will not like what I have to say. That is myfinalwarning.”
“What? I’m just saying what everyone else is thinking!” she raises her voice.
“I wasn’t thinking that at all,” Logan interrupts. “I know you were close with Becca, but Riley and Liam together has nothing to do with that.”
Riley is fidgeting next to me, and I’m at loss for how to make this better for her. I knew us going public could cause some judgement, but I never thought it would come so strongly from one of my own family members. I figured Peyton would be upset at first but cool off and move on. Her saying such a hurtful thing is the last thing I expected from her.
“I know this is a bad time to tell you guys this, but I feel like I need to offer some warning,” Mom interrupts. “I invited Shirley and Robert over for dinner tonight.”
I can see the look of panic set over Riley’s face, and I have to agree that this is not an ideal scenario. Of all the times for my mom to set this up, and for them to actually accept, it had to be tonight. Before I even have time to respond, Dad walks back out with our drinks followed by Shirley and Robert.
