Which no one understood.

They were clearly wrong for each other.

But, Jillian had her reasons. And no matter what they were—I stuck by her side and supported whatever she did.

Even when it wasn’t what I thought she should do.

“And besides, my mom always says that you never know what goes on behind closed doors.”

I shook my head back and forth. “He’s never hit me or anything like that,” I whispered to her. “I don’t want you to think he hurt me.”

She shut her eyes briefly. When she opened them, she said, “I’m here for you. Don’t hesitate to lean on me, kid.”

It always made me laugh when she called me kid.

Jillian wasn’t that much older than me. Only a few years.

Which was practically nothing. “Thanks, Jillybean. You’re the best.”
