“Me too.” She stood to farewell him.

“So, you’re going ahead with the lawn mowing, then?”

“Of course, I am.”

“Great.” There was no need to tell her he thought she might pull out after what happened with Benni this afternoon. Some women would’ve pouted and sulked and refused to get on with it. But Kee was keeping her word. This was more proof that she was made of stern stuff. When she said she’d do something, she followed through with it.

“I’ll meet you at the garden shed straight after breakfast. Say eight-thirty?”

“See you then.”

Wazza leaned down to retrieve his hat and when he straightened, Kee was standing in front of him. She reached up on tiptoe and lightly kissed him on the cheek. A chaste kiss. But it told him everything he needed to know. She was grateful for his help. And she thought he was a good man. Both of those things were enough for him tonight. His skin buzzed with the memory of her butterfly-light touch all the way back to the staff quarters.
