I raise my eyebrow at him. “Why on earth would you be sorry for that?” I laugh then I wiggle my feet in his lap. “Don’t stop. Please.”
He bites his lip and then smiles back at me. He’s about to continue when suddenly the doorbell rings. I roll my eyes. “Of course.”
He gets up, and I narrow my eyes at him. “This isn’t over. You can’t just tempt me with a foot rub and not follow through.”
He laughs. “I’ll make sure it’s the best foot rub you’ve ever had.” Then he turns toward the door. “Who’s coming over this late anyway?” I just shrug, and he walks toward the door and opens it up.
I can’t see who it is, but I hear the anger in Eric’s voice. “What the fuck are you doing here?”
I lean forward but still can’t really tell who it is, but I hear. “I just heard. I came to apologize.”
Eric raises his voice even more. “Don’t you think you’ve done enough?”
I try to get up, but it takes a little bit as I was laying down, and I don’t want to move too quickly. I’ve been able to move around a lot more the past couple weeks, but sometimes it still hurts, especially trying to stand up.
“Just let me see her.” That’s when I notice the Irish accent. Killian. Oh no. This isn’t going to be good.
I start walking toward the door, but it’s too late. Eric is already shoving Killian backwards away from the door. “What are you thinking coming here? What if your “friends” followed you? The only reason she’s safe is because they think she doesn’t mean anything to you. What does you showing up here show them?”
When I reach the door, Eric is right up in Killian’s face. Of course Killian doesn’t look scared or anything considering he’s probably faced much worse than a dad before. “Eric!”
He turns and looks at me. Both men’s faces soften when they look over at me. Eric goes to open his mouth, but I stop him. “Just let me talk to him.”
He looks angry, but doesn’t argue with me. He turns back to Killian. “Two minutes. Then you’re gone.”
Killian just nods, and I walk up to him. Eric steps back but doesn’t go back inside. He stays put never straying his eyes from us like he thinks Killian is going to try to hurt me or something. It’s ridiculous, but I can’t help but like the protective side of him.
Killian smiles down at me and takes in the remaining bruising and scarring. “I’m so sorry. I never meant for you to get involved in anything like this.” He whispers so Eric can’t overhear what he’s saying.
“I know. And I know it’s not entirely your fault, but at the same time, I can’t really hang around you anymore. That lifestyle is not for me.”
He grins and brushes my hair behind my ear. “I know love. You like the dad type.” He nods over toward Eric, and I laugh. “Yes, something like that.”
Eric started walking toward us the second Killian touched me. “Alright. I’d say that’s about enough. I think it’s time for you to leave.”
Killian actually smiles over at Eric for the first time. “Take care of our girl here.”
Eric doesn’t return the gesture. Instead he narrows his eyes at him. “She’s only my girl.”
I bite my lip to hide my smile. I know he doesn’t mean it in the way it sounds, but it still warms my heart. Killian gives me one last smile and then turns to leave. I start walking back into the house and Eric follows me. “What did he say to you?”
I turn and raise an eyebrow at him. “None of your business.”
I continue walking back toward the couch. “I don’t want you to see him anymore.”
I let out a sarcastic laugh. “Again, none of your business what I do.”
His voice is still angry. “So you are going to see him again?”
I turn around and narrow my eyes at him. “I didn’t say that.”
“Then what are you saying?”
I cross my arms over my chest. “I’m saying you don’t get to tell me what to do.” He is about to open his mouth to protest again so I cut him off. “Look Eric. You’re not my boyfriend. You’re definitely not my dad. Honestly, I’m pretty tired of this game you’re playing.”
He leans back in a defensive stance. “I’m not playing any game with you.”
I just shrug and turn back around. “I think I should go back home now. I appreciate all you’ve done for me, but I’m pretty much all better now. The doctor even said I would be pretty much all healed by now. It will just be painful for a little while longer. I don’t need to be here anymore. It’s making things too complicated.”
