We pull up to our house, and I quickly hop out of the truck. I grab my phone back from Emory, and rush back into the house. Alaric chases after me. “Oh for Christ sake.” He says. I hear Emory laugh. “He’s your friend. Go take care of it.”
He follows me into the house, but he’s too late. I’m already dialing Angela’s number. On the third ring, I hear her voice. “Hello?” She sounds confused like maybe she thinks I pocket dialed her.
“Angela?” I hear Alaric shut the front door, so I quickly run to my room and lock the door behind me. He starts pounding on the door. “Do not call her Eric!” I just shout back. “Too late!”
I hear Angela giggle and the sound makes my heart clench. I love when she smiles. Then her tone turns more serious again. “What do you want Eric?”
I sigh and sit down on my bed. “I just wanted to make sure you got home safely.”
“Don’t you mean you want to make sure we got home safely?” She asks sarcastically.
“No. I don’t give a fuck about him.” It comes out more angry than I wanted it to. I hope she doesn’t just hang up on me. I have no right to be jealous. Surprisingly, she giggles again. “Oh, but you do give a fuck about me?”
I lay back on my bed and smile at her laugh. I don’t even answer her question. I just breathe out. “I miss you.”
She doesn’t respond for a moment. “Eric, are you drunk?”
Her voice sounds angry, but I can’t lie to her. I’m not capable of it. “I’ve had a few more drinks than usual, but I-.”
She cuts me off. “Goodbye Eric.” Then the phone line goes dead.
“Fuck!” I throw my phone hard back on my bed.
I hear Alaric knocking again. “Open the door Eric.” I groan and walk over to the door and open it. “What?” He can tell by the look on my face that the phone call didn’t go well, and he just smirks. “See, now don’t you wish you listened to my advice?”
“No.” I know he’s right, but I’m not about to admit that to him. I sit back down on my bed and sigh. I run my hands down my face in frustration and look back up at him. “What other advice you got?” I can’t keep going on like this, so I’ll take any suggestions I can get.
He leans against the door frame. “Well, first we need to get you laid so you can stop obsessing over this girl.”
I cringe at his words. “I don’t want to get laid.”
He rolls his eyes. “I know. That’s what got you into this mess in the first place.”
I bite my lip and think about being with Angela again. I definitely want to get laid if it involves her. I look back up at him. “Yeah, true. Why don’t you drive me over there right now? I’ll correct that mistake.”
He lets out a laugh. “No Eric. We need to find you someone your own age so you can stop freaking out and just relax with the woman.” He smiles at me. “C’mon we can go hit up some bars on Friday like we used to.”
I sigh again. “You know I didn’t pick up girls at the bar back then either.”
Alaric just rolls his eyes. “Yeah, I know. That’s why I’m coming with you to make sure you follow through.” He looks at me more seriously. “For real, when is the last time you even had a girlfriend? Kelly? 3 years ago? Does she count as a girlfriend? Pretty sure you just told me that to get me off your back.”
I just shrug. “Work’s been busy. I don’t have time for women.” He just rolls his eyes. “You’ve had plenty of time for Angela though.”
I grit my teeth. “I thought you were supposed to be helping me.” Then a thought occurs to me. “What are you going to do the whole night? Are you bringing Emory?” He just shrugs. “Unless you don’t want me to?”
I think about it for a second. “I guess I don’t care. Alright fine. Friday.”
He gives me a nod and then heads back out to Emory’s place. Even though his room is still here in my house, he hasn’t slept here since they’ve gotten together, which is fine by me especially if I’m going to bring someone home on Friday. Probably isn’t a turn on to have a grown ass man with a roommate hanging around. I let out a sigh and lay back down on my bed. I just don’t know if I’ll be able to follow through. No one interests me the way she does.
???
I woke up the next morning with the hangover from hell. My body really cannot handle alcohol the way it used to. After I showered, I headed into my home office to work. Even though I did sleep in, I didn’t really want to take the whole day off. I’ll at least get some paperwork and e-mails taken care of today so I don’t get too far behind.
After about an hour of working, I grab my phone. I just stare at it for a few minutes. I probably shouldn’t, but I decide to text Angela anyway.
Me: I’m sorry about last night.
A couple hours later, I see she read the message but she didn’t ever respond. I know I deserve that, but I’m still disappointed. I need to stop playing games with her though. I already told her we couldn’t be together, so why can’t I just leave her alone?
