Chapter 9

Angela

I wake up and all I feel is pain. It feels like my head is throbbing, and why is it so hard to breath? Fuck, my chest hurts. The last thing I remember is those thugs that Killian pissed off beating me up. Well, then I have a memory or maybe it was a dream and Eric was there whispering in my ear, telling me everything was going to be okay.

I peek my eyes open slowly and look around to see I’m in a hospital bed. How did I get here? I see a doctor in the room then, and she smiles at me. “Hi there Angela, how are you feeling?”

I moan as I try to sit up better. “Not great.”

She frowns at me. “Yes, sorry I know. You’ll probably be in pain for the next coming weeks, but it’ll get better each day. We have you hooked up with pain meds right now while you’re in the hospital, but we’ll also send a prescription with you when you leave.”

I nod. “How long will I be here for?

She smiles then. “We are going to have you stay overnight just to monitor your head to make sure there are no internal problems, but we don’t suspect there are. You should be out of here by tomorrow.”

I nod and she begins checking some of my vitals. “There are a couple of police officers waiting to talk to you. We’re not sure exactly what happened to you. Is it okay if I send them in?”

I nod my head sure. After she finishes checking everything, she walks out and two police officers walk in and smile at me. I can see the pity in their eyes. I try to put on a brave face. I hate when people pity me. The first officer walks closer to me. “Hi Angela, we want to ask you what happened. Do you remember how you got here?”

I shake my head no. The officer smiles again. “A man called the police and the ambulance brought you here. Do you remember that at all?”

A man? Eric! Maybe it wasn’t a dream. “Eric? Is he here?”

The police officer’s eyes soften again. “Don’t worry. No one can get to you here. We have the room guarded.”

“Guarded?” I ask confused. Then I understand. “Oh fuck, no this wasn’t Eric!”

They pass a glance between each other and then look back over at me. “Do you remember what happened? How you got attacked?”

I shake my head yes. “Yeah uhm...” I don’t know how much to reveal. Obviously Killian is caught up in some shady shit. I don’t want to upset them even more. I definitely don’t want to be a witness or have to testify against either of them. That seems more dangerous than the risk of them coming back again. “Two guys came into my work. I was all alone.”

The cop nods his head for me to continue. “They said they were getting payback for something some guy did to their friend. They acted like I was this guy’s girlfriend.”

The cop nods. “Do you know what guy they were talking about?”

I shake my head no even though that’s a lie. “I’m not dating anyone, but I’ve hooked up with some guys like that I met at clubs and stuff. Maybe it was one of them.” I shrug.

The cop writes all this down and then looks back up at me. “Do you have these guys’ names and numbers?”

I cringe. “Uhm...I don’t think so. I mean first names, but we didn’t exactly exchange numbers.” It’s not a complete lie. I have hooked up, just not recently.

They ask a few more questions about security and if we have cameras or not. They said they’d check the cameras of local businesses to see if they could tell who came in. They give me their card and tell me to call them if I think of anything else that might be helpful.

A few minutes after they leave the room Emory comes storming in a blubbering mess. “I was so worried about you!” She goes to give me a hug but then pulls back. “Shit I forgot. Broken rib.”

I laugh, but it hurts so I stop. Emory gives me those sad eyes, and I just glare back. She throws up her hands. “I know. I know. Don’t ever feel sympathy for you. You’re one tough bitch that can’t be brought down.”

I smile. “You know it.”

Emory just smiles back. “You’re staying at my dad’s place until you’re better. We already got it all figured out.”

I raise my eyebrows in surprise. “Uhm...do you really think that’s a good idea?”

She just laughs. “Oh please. You know the one person who is going to take care of you best is my dad. He’s been freaking me out even more with how worried he’s been. He won’t sit still for 5 seconds. He just keeps pacing back and forth in the waiting room making all the other visitors nervous.”

I give her a half smile and look down. “Is he the one who found me?”

Emory sits on my bed and grabs my hand. “Yeah. He didn’t know what happened though. He said he found you on the ground passed out. What did happen?”
