Chapter 15
Ibarely see Alaric the rest of the week. Only when he absolutely needs something done does he come to my office, and it’s not like I’ve been seeking him out. After my talk with my dad, I was kind of hoping he’d come try to talk to me again. I know I should have known better, but I let myself sulk all week anyway.
Angela texts me on Friday to see if I want to go out tonight. I grab my phone on my lunch break and call her. “Hey girl. I’m down. Where to?”
I hear Angela squeal. “Oh yay! I’m so excited. We need to get out. Forget about all these boy issues.”
I laugh. “What boy issues do you have? Is my dad not texting you back?”
She laughs too. “Well, I haven’t texted him since you were being all whiny about it. But yes. He is my problem because I want to text him. I need to find a hottie to distract me.”
I laugh again. “Oh good idea we can find some boys our own age.”
I spin around in my chair, and I come face to face with Alaric. His face looks angry, and his eyes are narrowed at me. I let out a small gasp and place my hand over my chest. How did he sneak in here so quiet?
“Are you okay?” Angela asks, sounding concerned.
I let out a breath. “Yes. Sorry.”
She sounds relieved. “Good. I thought some of Alaric’s brother’s thugs were after you or something.”
I laugh. “No. Nothing like that. Just that other thorn in my side.” I narrow my eyes back at him. “Can I call you back?”
Angela says bye and hangs up. “Can I help you with something? How long were you standing there? Do you always creep up on people like that?”
He doesn’t smile at me. “Do you always spend all day on personal calls instead of working?”
I open my eyes wide at him. “Wow. Someone’s extra snarky today.”
He just narrows his eyes at me. “You guys shouldn’t be going out alone.”
“Wow. Eavesdropping too.” I cross my arms over my chest.
He doesn’t even care that he was. “I’m serious Emory.”
I roll my eyes. “What I do in my personal life is none of your business. You’re the reason I have to be looking over my shoulder anyway.”
He cringes at that because he knows it’s true. “Exactly, which is why I can’t let you go out alone.”
I raise an eyebrow at him. “You can’t stop me. You going to track us down or something?”
He sneers back at me. “Don’t think I won’t. You’re my responsibility.”
I stand and place my hands on my desk. “I am no such thing.” I challenge him.
He just smirks. “I already texted your dad. He asked me to drive you guys. You going to tell daddy no?”
I open my mouth at him. “You didn’t!”
He leans forward and places his hands on my desk too. “You underestimate me Emory.”
I throw my hands up. “Sorry that ‘the devil’ was too tame of a name for what you are.”
He just turns and walks out. “See you tonight!”
???
Angela heads over to my place before we go out. Since we have a DD now, we are going to pregame hard so we don’t have to waste money on drinks at the bar. Although, I’m sure we can get them bought for us. That is, as long as Alaric doesn’t try to hang around.
