Chapter One
JACE
What the hell is going on around here?
Dell is crying and screaming for someone named Ana as Alec and Sam try to comfort her, I have no idea who the fuck that is or what to do with a distraught woman, so I turn to Bell and Silas. They’re in even worse shape than Dell, howling like they’re dying.
Did I miss someone dying?
Silas and Bell are leaning against each other howling over and over with tears streaming down their faces. The sounds sending shivers down my spine, making my heart hurt for them, but I’m still confused.
What a fucking home coming.
“What is wrong with you bastards?” I ask, hoping that they’ll stop all the damn noise before me and the rest of the pack house starts up with it. It’s one of those wolf things where if one of us is doing it then eventually we all will be, especially since it’s our Alpha who started the whole thing.
“Mate,” is all Silas can utter, and I feel terrible for him. I missed him like crazy but all these tears are just too much for me.
That doesn’t really tell me shit.
Sighing, I plop down on the couch only to see a small red-haired girl sitting next to me covering her ears.
“Who are you?” I ask when I get her attention, she takes her hands off her ears and signals to her throat and then shakes her head.
“You can’t talk?” I ask and she nods her head this time.
“Can you type?” I insist, needing answers that I’m obviously not going to get from my two best friends. When she nods this time I pull out my phone, open the note app and hand it to her.
“Do you have any idea what’s going on here?” I ask the child because besides me she seems to be the only sane one in the room right now.
When she hands me back my phone after typing for a few minutes I read it outloud to myself.
“My name is Scarlett. Silas, Jade, and Mila rescued me from the witches that took my voice. But Jade and Mila left and that’s why everyone is sad. Something about mates.” Her note explains and I don’t really know what to say at the moment.
“Thank you. Do you want some food?” I ask her and she doesn’t even have to answer as her stomach growls loudly.
“I can take her,” Sam says, extracting himself from whatever the hell is going on with Dell.
“She can’t talk, apparently the witches took her voice,” I explain to him when he comes to stand next to the couch.
“There’s a little boy that comes into the library that’s deaf. I’ve learned a few things for him. Perhaps you could teach me more?” he asks Scarlett, reaching out his hand for hers.
She looks up at the sweet Omega wolf smiling down at her and only pauses a second before taking his offered palm. As soon as they’re holding hands I can see what little tension she was carrying in her shoulders disappear as his calming mojo takes hold. A small smile graces both their faces as they turn and walk out of the room.
Seconds after they’re gone I instantly wish that I’d gone with them. The room that used to be a safe place now feels like the walls are closing in, as I’m trapped in here with all these people ‘feeling’. That makes me sound like a cold asshole but for fucks’ sake could we all pull it together for a second so I can breathe.
Now I understand what Sam must feel like all the time with his Omega emotional radar. It’s fucking overwhelming and I’m just getting the bare minimum.
“Is there any way that you all could get it together for a second and tell me what’s going on?” I ask, trying to be calm and understanding, but from the stink eyes that find me after my question I’m pretty sure I failed.
“Well from what I’ve gathered Jade or ‘Kitten’ as Darius called her, is not only Dell’s childhood best friend that disappeared, but also your Alpha and Bellamy’s mate, and apparently she chose to leave and reject them,” Alec explains, using more words now than I think he’s spoken the entire time he has been here, except when he talked to Dell or Sam. Guess I should feel honored.
“Well shit,” I say, looking over at my two best friends holding tightly onto one another.
I have no fucking clue how to handle this situation, I was raised to be strong physically. My emotional stability most days is pretty questionable. I’m not sure how to help my friends and it makes me feel like absolute shit.
“Well she’s not dead, can’t you just give her some time, then try and win her back?” I ask my two best friends, wanting to throw a bit of logic into this overly emotional situation.
“And Dell she probably wants to see you, but she just got reunited with Darius after escaping hell, I’m sure that she missed you too,” I tell the deadly assassin, hoping that my words take hold and she doesn’t kill me for butting in.
