Ransom

Broments

I glanced at Chaos, and she waved me on. If I couldn’t leave her in a room full of her family, then we really were in trouble.

Clay walked out into the atrium.

Beckett caught my attention as I wavered about joining him. Knowing Willow would be safe wasn’t the same as being there myself to ensure it. “I’ll keep an eye on her, Ransom.”

“Thanks.”

I followed my best friend into the sunshine. He went over to the tree and linked his hands behind his back. Hopefully, that would negate a swing for my head.

“I can’t believe you kept this from me.”

“I didn’t exactly know how to tell you.”

“I was literally at your house. You could have told me then.”

“And what? You’d have to hold it back or tell Rachel and worry her before we knew anything?”

“Not your choice to make.”

I sighed. “I did the best I could.”

“And you’d still do the same thing,” he said flatly.

“You and Rach have been through enough. We both wanted you to be able to enjoy your wedding stuff.”

“Not your call, man.”

“Sheis my call. Now.”

“That’s mighty quick.” Clay folded his arms. “You were running for the hills whenever she was going to be around this winter.”

“Yeah, well, I knew she was trouble.”

He relaxed his shoulders a fraction. “Is that right? You really do love her.”

“It doesn’t make sense.”

Clay laughed. “Then you really do. Because I was scared as fuck when it happened to me. Those Doyle women get under your skin.”

“And then some.”

“You sure it’s not just the…” Clay cleared his throat. “Adrenaline?”

“Sex is great.”

“Please, no. She’s like my sister.”

“Well, it’s awesome with Chaos, but I mean, in general, sex is great.”

“Duh.”

I laughed. “But if it was just sex, we would have gotten out of our system and moved on.”

“How do you know it’s not your dick talking? And your overactive protective instincts.”
