“You are back,” she said, and it sounded accusatory.

“I went in search of breakfast. If this isn’t a resort, what is it?”

She ignored the question. “I am sure you went to search for the bride, too.”

Shrugging, I took a step forward. She held her ground, blocking my entrance. Her lips were set in a severe line, but I couldn’t tell what was going on with her eyes. Was she tired, or had she been crying?

She lifted her face, almost defiantly. “The newlyweds left,” she said. “They are going on their honeymoon. I am leaving as well, going to my place in Sardegna for a couple of days. There will be a party there. They accepted my invitation to attend.”

For some reason, I felt like she was testing me. I had no clue why, but it was one of those things—like when a woman says she’s fine but she’s about to start a war.

“Is that invitation extended to me?”

She shrugged. “Do what you want.”

Another dangerous statement. It really meantdo the opposite of what you want.

She went to take a step back, to close the door, but I didn’t give her the opportunity. I stopped the door before she could shut it in my face. I leaned down some, getting closer to her, so only she could hear. “I don’t know what the fuck happened between last night and this morning, I don’t know who the fuck you were shouting at, but we had a deal. Are you reneging, princess?”

“That isprincipessato you,” she said. “And that depends. Are you reneging?”

“Explain.”

“You are not fun.”

The deal we made.

I pushed past her. From what I could tell, she was the only one in the place. So, unless she’d been on the phone, which it didn’t seem like it, she’d been pissed and going off on whoever or whatever she’d been pissed about alone.

“You want fun, principessa? You have no idea how much fucking fun I can be. I’ll just need to do something before I can keep up with my end of the deal.”

She raised her eyebrows and planted her hands on her hips. I took that as a sign to continue.

“My things from the hotel I was staying at. I left all my fun clothes there.”

The sound of Nonno laughing was loud until it faded into the distance.
