Keely was spraying the place with something strong, especially where Harrison had been sitting on the sofa. Declan had rubber gloves on, and Lachlan was looking for a pair.
Cash was sitting back, watching it all with a grin on his face.
My cousin stood by the open door, like he was letting in fresh air. It was freezing. I opened my mouth to tell him to shut it when his wife stood on the other side of the counter from me.
“I only have a second,” she said. “Capo is worried about me getting sick, because of the—” She nodded toward her stomach. The baby. Then her eyes met mine and she stuck her chin up. “He’s all yours. Take care of him.”
She turned and headed out with my cousin, his hand protectively on her neck.
I’d used those same words to her in a Sicilian church, regarding my cousin, after our grandfather had died.
Take care of him.
I meant them sincerely. I could tell she did, too.
“Hey.” Keely came to stand in front of me. She’d fastened a shirt around her face somehow. “What can I do to help?”
Her eyes were sincere, too.
We got to work, side by side.
