“You’re doing great,” Brie encouraged as he pushed forward and took a wobbly step. Gritting his teeth, he tried to push through the weakness and the pain. He could do this. In fact, he’d probably be able to do anything with her cheering him on. He wondered what it would look like to have her in his corner permanently. The way his insides lit up with her smile. The way her eyes sparked when she laughed. He could easily get used to having her around. Oh, who was he kidding? It’s never going to happen, buddy. He really ought to stop torturing himself with unattainable dreams.

Step by slow step, with every muscle trembling, he inched his way down the hall. There would be no need for an upper-body strengthening session later that day; this was a full-body workout in itself.

“Here he is,” Brie announced with a cheer as they entered the waiting room.

Aunt Helen stood clutching her hands to her chest. “Look at you!” She rushed over and pressed a kiss to his cheek. “I don’t believe it! Matt, this is amazing! Does this mean no more wheelchair?”

“He’ll probably tire quickly using the frame, so he’ll still need the wheelchair. But it’s progress, and if he keeps this up, he’ll be on crutches in no time.”

“Praise the Lord!” Aunt Helen gushed. Matt offered a tight smile as the room began to swim. He needed to sit down. The walk had exhausted him. So stupid how such a small distance could leave him feeling like he’d run a marathon. His breath came in short bursts as he lowered into the chair Brie held ready behind him.

“All the best, Matt.” Her hand rested on his forearm as she came into view. He was too focused on trying to catch his breath to fully comprehend what she was saying, but he didn’t miss the look of pride in her amber eyes. “Be sure to look after Winston.” She winked.

“Th – thanks.” He cleared his throat. If only he could hug her, there was nothing wrong with his arms, and show her how appreciative he was that she’d gotten him this far. Sure, he’d been the one who was in pain and had walked out to the waiting room, but it was a team effort, and he’d be glad to have Brie on his team any day.
