To say I’m confused would be the understatement of the year, there aren’t many photos of Rayne on her sister’s profile, I take a screenshot and decide I’ll ask her about it later, or maybe do some delving of my own first. Why did she lie to me?

I dial Gus and look out to the fading light of the day.

“Boss.”

“Did you get everything on Rayne Michaelson?”

“Everything you’re looking at. The girl’s clean, not even a parking ticket.”

“Hmm.” I stroke my chin as I think.

I always know what to do in any situation. No point asking him to dig deeper, he did that already. I guess I have to go straight to the source. I have an unsettling feeling in my bones, which I’ve felt here and there, but haven’t paid much attention to. Now my interest is piqued, and I need to know why she told me her sister was dead when she’s clearly not.

There’s a part of me that knows nobody is this perfect, there are skeletons in every closet. If she knew the real me, she would run as fast as her heels could carry her.

I sigh, downing my whisky with one throw. I don’t even feel the burn.

I should have been at Fortress hours ago, but sometimes I need to take a moment to myself after a kill to wash my hands of my sins.

I need to message Rayne and ask her to the Gala this coming weekend, or maybe I’ll just show up at her place again, and this time I’ll shove her down on her knees to take my cock while she explains why she’s made a very grave decision in lying to me.

That’s when I glance at the message from Enzo and narrow my eyes.

Pick up the fucking phone! We’ve got a big problem.

I sigh. A man can’t get a fucking break without someone interrupting. I’m about to dial back when my doorbell rings, and I frown. I’m not expecting anyone.

I look at the security camera on my computer screen and I see Allegra on my front doorstep.

I’ve been an asshole and not even messaged her back about going for dinner before she leaves the country. I can’t exactly help it if my cock’s been busy this week.

My housekeeper, Sophia, knocks on my open door a few moments later and pokes her head in.

“Mr. Medici. I have Allegra Medici here to see you.”

I feel somewhat irritated. I don’t have time for this shit. While I like Allegra, and she’s a part of the family, I’ve got important shit to do and now I’m going to be late.

I interlink my fingers as she waits for my answer. “Thank you, Sophia, send her in.”

“Can I offer you something to eat, sir? Or your guest?”

I give her a rare smile. “I meant no the last five times you asked me, but I appreciate that you don’t want me to starve, and she won’t be staying.”

“Very well, sir.”

Sophia takes her leave and a few moments later, I hear the click-clack of heels down my marble floor and then Allegra appears in my doorway.

As usual, she’s stunning. Dressed in a tight-fitting black skirt and a lacy-fitted blouse synched at the waist. Her dark hair is shining like she just stepped out of a runway magazine.

I stand. “Allegra, to what do I owe this unexpected visit?”

I move around my desk as we embrace. I kiss her cheek on each side as she clutches a black Chanel purse and stands back to assess me.

“You look tired,” she says. I notice she’s holding onto a takeout bag that smells distinctly like my favorite tacos.

“Thanks, nice to see you, too.”

“I was in the neighborhood, and I thought you may like a little snack.” She waves the bag at me.
